What about Ubuntu derivatives for desktop? My go to recommendations are Pop! OS and Linux Mint (which I use).
Pop! Os user going on a year now and I can’t recommend it enough, at least as a first distro.

kde: kde neon
cinnamon: mint
cosmic: pop
and just let them choose what they want
